Tom Greenwood at the Detroit News reports on a new study showing that traffic may flow up to 15% better if both lanes are used up until the last minute. Counterintuitive, no doubt, especially for all of the “early mergers” who have watched other speed by in the open lane up to the merge point.
So which type of driver are you:
- The “early merger” who grumbles as the “late mergers” speed by?
- or the “late merger” who sees an open lane and takes it?
Will this new study change your driving habits in any way? I’m an early merger, but now that I have a free pass will likely use that empty lane more often. Hopefully, though, I won’t get punched out by anyone who hasn’t read the study!
