The State of Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services announced today that it is “allowing health insurers to reinstate canceled policies.” Also, “the decision allows insurers the option to reinstate policies that were discontinued on Jan. 1, 2014, due to non-compliance with provisions in ACA.”
“Option” is the key word. Soon after the state announcement, I received a release from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan stating that it WILL NOT reinstate the cancelled plans, but will “continue the process of transitioning small groups and individuals to reform-compliant plans.”
In summary, the largest individual insurer in the state will not bring back the cancelled plans. Current Blue Cross members should continue evaluating 2014 plan options.
